Most people deal with a car accident once or twice in their life. Insurance companies and shops deal with thousands. Here's how to level the playing field.
At the Scene
- Check for injuries first. Call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- Move to safety if the cars are drivable.
- Call police — a police report protects you later, even for minor accidents.
- Photograph everything: all vehicles, damage, license plates, the scene, skid marks.
- Exchange info: name, phone, insurance, license plate, driver's license number.
- Never admit fault at the scene. Just stick to facts.
Within 24 Hours
- File your insurance claim. Call your insurer — most have 24/7 lines.
- Get a repair estimate. You have the legal right in California to choose your own shop. The insurance company's "preferred" shop is their choice, not yours.
- Document everything — claim number, adjuster name, every conversation.
Choosing a Repair Shop
California law says you pick the shop, not the insurance company. Look for: OEM or quality aftermarket parts (ask which), a written warranty, ADAS recalibration if your car has driver-assist features, and direct insurance billing so you're not fronting the cost.
What About a Rental Car?
If the other driver was at fault, their insurance should cover a rental. If it was your fault, it depends on your policy — check if you have rental reimbursement coverage. We help coordinate rentals for our customers either way.
