What We Do

Auto Painting — Refinish, Color Match & Full Repaints

Paint is the part of the repair everybody sees, and the part that gives away a bad job. At Crown, painting isn't an afterthought to bodywork — it's half the craft. We refinish single panels after collision repair, repaint faded or peeling finishes, and take on full repaints. Every job runs through the same discipline: correct prep, computerized color matching, a spray-out card checked against your car, and a daylight inspection before delivery.

Most of our paint work is collision-related — a repaired fender, a replaced door, a bumper that has to match the quarter panel next to it. Matching isn't just finding the paint code. Factory paint fades and varies by production run, so we pull variant formulas, spray a test card, and compare it to your actual panel in real light. When a panel sits between two others, we blend into the neighbors so your eye never finds the edge of the repair.

How It Works

Our Painting Process

Prep is the paint job. Here's the sequence every panel goes through.

01

Prep

The panel is sanded, repaired areas are primed and blocked smooth, and everything that isn't being painted is masked or removed. Paint only looks as good as what's under it — this is where cheap paint jobs cut corners.

02

Color Match

We pull your car's paint code, mix the variant that matches its age and fade, and spray a test card. The card is checked against the car in daylight before paint goes on the panel.

03

In the Booth

Sealer, base coat, and clear coat are sprayed in our booth, where airflow and filtration keep dust out of the finish. Metallics and pearls are laid down the way the factory sprayed them, so the color reads right from every angle.

04

Cure, Polish & QC

After curing, the finish is leveled and polished where needed, trim is reinstalled, and the car is inspected outside in daylight. If the match or the finish isn't right, it goes back — it doesn't go home.

Cost & Timeline

What Affects the Cost of Paint Work

Paint pricing is driven by scope and by paint. Scope first: a single panel is a different job than a full repaint, which means stripping, extensive prep, and painting every surface. Vehicle size matters — a truck takes more material and booth time than a coupe. The paint itself matters: solid colors are simplest, metallics take more material and technique, and pearl and tri-coat finishes add a whole stage. Condition matters too — failing clear coat, rust, and layers of old paint all have to be dealt with before new paint goes on, and removing trim, handles, and glass for a proper job adds labor. That's why we quote paint work from an in-person look or good photos — free.

Timelines follow scope. A single panel is typically a few days including cure time. Full repaints run longer — prep is most of the job, and rushing cure time is how finishes fail early. Your estimate includes a completion window.

Insurance & Why Crown

Paint Claims and the Crown Standard

When paint is part of a collision repair, it's part of the claim. We work with all insurance companies and document the refinish operations, blending, and materials so the estimate reflects the real job. Standalone paint work — a faded hood, a peeling roof, a full repaint — is usually customer-pay. Our Insurance Claims Guide explains how the claim side works when it applies.

Common Questions

Auto Painting & Color Matching — FAQ

How much does it cost to paint a car in Milpitas?

It depends on the job's scope and the paint itself: how many panels, the size of the vehicle, whether the color is a solid, metallic, pearl, or tri-coat, and how much prep the existing finish needs. A single panel and a full repaint are entirely different jobs. Estimates are free: text photos to 408-935-0210 or stop by, and we'll price your car, not a generic one.

Will the new paint match my car's color?

Yes. We use computerized color matching that accounts for fade and variant formulas, sprayed in a dust-free booth. The repair blends invisibly.

Do you offer a warranty on paint work?

Yes — every paint and refinish job carries our lifetime workmanship warranty. If the paint fails due to our workmanship, we make it right. Like any finish, it doesn't cover new damage or neglect — sap and bird droppings left baking on paint will etch any finish, ours or the factory's, so wash them off promptly.

How long does it take to paint a car?

A single panel is typically a few days, including prep and cure time. A full repaint takes longer — most of the work is preparation, and cure time can't be rushed without weakening the finish. Your free estimate includes a realistic timeline, and we keep you updated as it moves through the booth.

Can you paint just one panel?

Yes — single-panel refinishing is most of what we do, because most paint work follows a collision repair on one fender, door, or bumper. The panel is color-matched to your car and blended into its neighbors, so the repair doesn't announce itself.

What is blending, and why does my car need it?

Blending means fading the new color out across the panel next to the repair, so there's no hard line where new paint meets old. Even a perfect color match can show an edge under some lights, because factory paint has aged and shifted. Blending makes the transition invisible — standard practice on quality collision work, and part of our estimates whenever a repair sits next to another panel.

Can you fix peeling or faded paint?

Usually, yes. Peeling clear coat and faded, oxidized paint have to be sanded back to a sound surface before new paint goes on — spraying over a failing finish just seals the failure in. We'll inspect the panel, tell you how deep the damage goes, and quote the prep honestly.
